London Stansted Airport has marked a successful year, welcoming a record-breaking 29.76 million passengers in 2024.

This surpasses the previous record of 28.14 million set in 2019, marking a 5.8% increase and solidifying the airport’s position as a major travel hub.

The surge in passenger numbers reflects a strong recovery from the pandemic and a growing demand for air travel. December 2024 proved to be the busiest December on record, with 2.23 million passengers utilizing the airport, a 7.4% increase compared to the same month in 2023.

This surge coincided with the holiday season, as many travelers chose Stansted as their departure point for festive getaways and winter breaks.

Global Reach and Domestic Appeal

Stansted’s appeal lies in its extensive route network, connecting travelers to over 200 destinations worldwide. Dublin, Istanbul, and Edinburgh emerged as the most popular destinations, while Spain, Italy, and Poland remained top choices for international travel.

The Middle Eastern market also continued to thrive, with Dubai remaining a key destination, particularly for travelers utilizing the popular Emirates service. The opening of a new luxury business lounge in October further enhanced the airport’s appeal to premium travelers.

Cargo Growth and Operational Performance

Beyond passenger traffic, Stansted experienced significant growth in its cargo operations. In 2024, the airport handled 307,675 tonnes of cargo, a 15.6% increase compared to the previous year. This highlights the airport’s vital role in facilitating regional and global trade.

Operational efficiency remained a top priority, ensuring a smooth and seamless travel experience for passengers. In December, 99% of passengers passed through security in under 15 minutes, with an average queue time of just over 3 minutes during peak departure periods.

Investment in the Future

This record-breaking year coincides with Stansted’s ambitious £1.1 billion transformation project. Several key initiatives are underway, including the development of an on-site solar farm to enhance sustainability.

Terminal upgrades will see improved access to the express drop-off area for a quicker and more convenient travel experience, and a new domestic baggage reclaim facility to streamline the arrival process.

Furthermore, the airport is actively engaging with the local community on its recently launched draft Sustainable Development Plan (SDP).

This long-term strategy outlines the airport’s vision for sustainable growth over the next 20 years. It will ensure that the airport’s operations remain environmentally responsible and minimize their impact on the surrounding communities.

A Bright Future Ahead

Gareth Powell, Managing Director of London Stansted, expressed his pride in the airport’s achievements. “We are incredibly proud of achieving this record-breaking passenger number,” he stated. “This success reflects the dedication of our team and the continued trust of our passengers and partners. Our focus on offering a wide range of affordable destinations and a reliable, efficient operation has been key to our success.”

Looking ahead, Stansted is poised for continued growth and success. With ongoing infrastructure improvements, a commitment to sustainability, and a focus on enhancing the passenger experience, London Stansted is well-positioned to remain a leading travel hub for years to come.
