London Heathrow Airport has kicked off 2025 with a resounding success, experiencing its busiest January on record. Over 6.3 million passengers journeyed through the UK’s sole hub airport, a significant 5% increase compared to the same period last year.
This impressive figure underscores Heathrow’s continued growth and its vital role in global connectivity.
Heathrow January Performance
This January’s performance marks a remarkable milestone: the eleventh consecutive month where Heathrow has served an average of over 200,000 passengers daily.
Transatlantic travel proved a key driver of this surge, with over 1.2 million passengers traveling between the UK and the US. This represents an 8% jump compared to January 2024, highlighting the strong demand for travel across the Atlantic.

‘Best UK Airport’ Award
Beyond its record-breaking passenger numbers, Heathrow has also cemented its reputation for excellence. For the fourth year running, the airport has been crowned “Best UK Airport” at the prestigious Travel Weekly Globe Travel Awards.
This accolade recognizes the dedication and hard work of the entire Team Heathrow, who strive to provide a smooth and positive experience for every passenger.
Air Cargo Performance
Heathrow’s importance extends beyond passenger travel. The airport’s unmatched global connections facilitated the successful delivery of nearly 120,000 tonnes of cargo in January.
This staggering volume represents twice the cargo handled by all other UK airports combined, solidifying Heathrow’s position as the UK’s most valuable port.
The airport plays a crucial role in driving trade and investment across the nation, supporting businesses and facilitating economic growth.

The Windsor Private Terminal
Heathrow is committed to continuously improving the passenger experience. As part of this commitment, the airport recently unveiled The Windsor by Heathrow.
This newly refurbished and rebranded private terminal signifies the first phase of a broader transformation of Heathrow’s world-renowned VIP offering, promising an elevated level of service and comfort for discerning travelers.
Third Runway & Expansion Plans
Looking to the future, Heathrow welcomes the Chancellor’s recent expression of support for a third runway. The airport recognizes that delivering this critical infrastructure project efficiently will require crucial policy changes.
These changes include airspace modernization, planning policy reform, and adjustments to the regulatory framework.
Heathrow is actively collaborating with stakeholders to finalize its expansion plans. It now aims to submit a comprehensive proposal to the government by this summer.

Conclusion
Thomas Woldbye, Heathrow’s CEO, commented on the airport’s exceptional start to 2025. “2025 has begun how we mean to go on. Serving record-breaking passenger numbers and delivering trade and investment across the whole of the UK,” he stated.
Woldbye emphasized the airport’s commitment to continued growth and highlighted the government’s support for expansion.
“To ensure we continue on this upwards trajectory, the Government has signalled their support for an expanded Heathrow. We’ll now work with Ministers to progress the necessary policy changes required to advance our growth plans.”
This proactive approach positions Heathrow for continued success and underscores its commitment to serving as a worldclass airport.
