Belgian national strike: A nationwide strike in Belgium on Thursday, February 13th, 2025, will cause significant disruption to air travel. It has resulted in a planned closure of Belgian airspace and the grounding of flights at major airports.

This action is driven by protests against government pension reforms and cost-cutting measures. The airspace closure will impact thousands of passengers and require airlines to implement contingency plans.

Strike Action Leads to Airspace Shutdown

The Belgian national strike, involving various sectors including air traffic controllers, will result in the closure of Belgian airspace from 6:45 am to 10:15 pm CET on February 13th.

This closure affects all flights operating below 7,500 meters, effectively halting most air traffic to, from, and over Belgium.

Major Belgian airports, including Brussels Airport, Charleroi Airport, Liège Airport, Antwerp Airport, and Ostend Airport, will experience a complete cessation of flight operations during this period.

Widespread Travel Disruption Expected

The impact of the airspace closure will be felt across the entire aviation network. Airlines are proactively cancelling flights scheduled for February 13th and advising passengers to contact them for rebooking options or refunds.

Passengers with travel plans involving Belgium on this date should expect significant delays and disruptions.

Airlines Implement Contingency Plans

In anticipation of the strike, airlines are implementing contingency plans to minimize passenger inconvenience. Some airlines are diverting flights to nearby airports in neighboring countries.

For example, Wizz Air has confirmed the diversion of nine passenger flights from Belgian airports to Maastricht Aachen Airport in the Netherlands.

Other airlines are likely to adopt similar strategies, utilizing alternative airports to maintain some level of service. However, even with these efforts, significant delays and cancellations are unavoidable.

Maastricht Aachen Airport Prepared for Increased Traffic

Airports in neighboring countries, like Maastricht Aachen Airport, are bracing for an influx of diverted flights. Maastricht Aachen Airport has experience handling such situations, having served as a regular alternative airport for Wizz Air.

In a statement, the airport said it is scaling up its operations by deploying staff from various departments to ensure smooth passenger flow and a positive experience for those affected by the diversions.

Support services, including catering, retail, cleaning, and security, are also increasing their capacity to meet the anticipated demand.

Reason Behind the Strike: Pension Reforms and Cost-Cutting

The nationwide strike is a response to the Belgian government’s proposed pension reforms and cost-cutting measures in public services.

Workers across various sectors are protesting these policies, arguing that they will negatively impact their livelihoods and the quality of public services.

The strike by air traffic controllers is a significant part of this broader protest movement.
