As families across the United Kingdom prepare for the February half-term break, a surge in air travel is anticipated. Aviation analytics firm Cirium‘s data reveals a significant uptick in flights, indicating a potential record-breaking holiday travel period.
Over 25,430 flights are scheduled to depart from UK airports during the half-term period, translating to over 4.6 million available seats.
This surge in travel highlights both the enduring popularity of half-term getaways and the continued recovery of the aviation industry.
Friday 21st Forecast as Peak Travel Day
The February half-term in the UK typically takes place in the middle of February. For 2025, the half-term holiday for most schools in England and Wales will run from February 14th to February 23rd.
Cirium’s analysis pinpoints Friday, February 21st, as the busiest day for departures. A staggering 2,759 flights are expected to take off from UK airports on this single day, marking a peak in holiday travel.
This concentrated travel flow emphasizes the importance of efficient airport operations and passenger management during peak periods.
Travelers are advised to arrive at airports well in advance of their scheduled departure times to navigate potential congestion.

Growth in Flights and Seat Capacity
The projected number of flights this half-term represents a substantial 6% increase compared to the same period in 2024. This growth reflects the rising demand for air travel and the expansion of airline services.
Furthermore, the number of available seats has also increased, demonstrating a 7% year-on-year rise. When compared to the pre-pandemic February half-term of 2019, the number of available seats is up 4%.
This suggests that airlines are deploying larger aircraft on UK routes, maximizing capacity to meet the growing demand.

Top Destinations and Airlines
For those seeking sunnier skies or cultural experiences, several international destinations are proving particularly popular with UK travelers.
Amsterdam, Dublin, Geneva, Paris Charles de Gaulle, and Tenerife South top the list of favored international getaways. These destinations offer a diverse range of attractions, from vibrant city life to relaxing beach holidays.
In terms of airlines, easyJet is projected to be the largest operator during the half-term period, followed by British Airways, Ryanair, Loganair, and Jet2.
These airlines are playing a crucial role in facilitating the increased travel demand, offering a variety of routes and flight options.

Airport Hotspots
Unsurprisingly, Heathrow Airport is expected to handle the largest volume of departures, reflecting its status as a major international hub.
Gatwick, Manchester, Stansted, and Edinburgh airports also anticipate significant traffic, rounding out the top five busiest airports during the half-term break.
These airports are preparing for the influx of passengers and implementing measures to ensure smooth and efficient travel experiences.
The significant increase in air travel this February half-term signals the continued pent-up demand in the travel sector and highlights the enduring UK appeal of holiday getaways.
