Queenstown Airport has reported a strong performance for the first half of the 2025 financial year. The period was marked by record passenger numbers, robust financial results, and significant progress on key strategic initiatives.
The airport’s interim report, covering the six months ending 31 December 2024, shows growth, innovation, and a strong commitment to sustainability.
Financial Highlights: A Positive Trajectory
The airport’s financial performance is undeniably strong. Revenue reached $40.4 million, a 22% jump compared to the same period last year.
Profit also saw a significant increase, up 27% to $16.2 million. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) reached $29.5 million.
This positive financial performance allows the airport to distribute an interim dividend of $7.0 million to its shareholders.
Airport Chair Simon Flood emphasized that the dividend decision reflects not only the strong results but also future commitments.

Passenger Growth and Smooth Operations
Queenstown Airport welcomed a respectable 1,343,006 passengers during the first half of FY25, a 6% increase year-on-year. This surge in passenger numbers underscores the continued popularity of Queenstown as a destination, particularly the strong trans-Tasman travel market.
Mr. Flood commended the airport team for ensuring smooth operations during peak winter and summer holiday periods, despite the record-breaking passenger flow. He highlighted the team’s hard work and professionalism in managing these peak times.
The Queenstown Airport Master Plan
Looking ahead, Queenstown Airport is embarking on the most significant capital investment program in its 90-year history. The Queenstown Airport Master Plan is a central focus, guiding the airport’s development for years to come.
Detailed planning is underway, encompassing capital investment, procurement, and phased program delivery. The airport is committed to keeping stakeholders informed about the Master Plan’s progress.

Pioneering Runway EMAS Technology
A major project currently underway is the installation of Engineered Materials Arresting System (EMAS) beds at both ends of the main runway. This $23 million project is on schedule and within budget.
Queenstown Airport is leading the way in Australasia by adopting this innovative technology, designed to safely stop aircraft that overshoot the runway.
Mr. Flood emphasized the importance of this investment in enhancing safety and mitigating risk.
Customer Experience and Sustainability: Key Priorities
Queenstown Airport is also focused on improving customer experience and furthering its commitment to sustainability.
Responding to customer feedback, the airport recently opened “Skippers,” a new bar and eatery in the international gate lounge, which has proven to be a popular addition.
The airport’s dedication to sustainability is evident in its achievement of a 71% reduction in organizational greenhouse gas emissions since 2019.
The airport also successfully transitioned to the globally recognized Airport Carbon Accreditation program, achieving Level 4+, the second-highest tier. Chief Executive Glen Sowry highlighted these achievements and the ongoing efforts to improve operational efficiency.

Leadership Transitions
Welcoming New Directors
The airport recently welcomed two new directors to its board. Dr. Don Elder, appointed by the QLDC, brings extensive experience in transport, infrastructure, and finance.
Mary-Liz Tuck, representing Auckland Airport, adds expertise in master planning, sustainability, and airport operations. Mr. Flood expressed his pleasure in welcoming both new directors.
Looking Ahead: CEO Departure
Finally, it was announced that CEO Glen Sowry will be leaving Queenstown Airport at the end of the financial year. The airport is now preparing for this transition and will begin the search for a new CEO. Under Sowry’s leadership, the airport has achieved significant growth and made considerable strides in sustainability and customer experience. His contributions will be missed.
