Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru (BLR Airport) has taken a leap forward in its cargo handling capabilities, unveiling India’s largest Greenfield Domestic Cargo Terminal (DCT).
This state-of-the-art facility, a collaborative effort with Menzies Aviation, marks a significant milestone in optimizing domestic cargo operations.
Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) operates this 245,000 square foot terminal. It is designed to meet the burgeoning demands of the domestic market.
A Leap in Capacity and Efficiency
Spanning over seven acres, the DCT boasts a peak handling capacity of approximately 360,000 metric tons, with the potential to expand to 400,000 metric tons.
Forty-two truck docks, over 400 specialized cargo bins, and a streamlined conveyor system integrated with X-ray machines support this impressive capacity.

Approximately 30 ULD build-up and breakdown stations, coupled with real-time data capture through 40 handheld terminals and self-service kiosks. This ensures streamlined cargo movement and drastically reduced turnaround times.
The terminal’s advanced technology and digital solutions further enhance its efficiency. Real-time shipment tracking, data analytics tools, and enhanced communication systems, integrated with barcodes and QR codes, facilitate seamless data exchange with airline systems.
This digitization minimizes human touchpoints, accelerating cargo handling and enhancing safety. By streamlining operations and improving supply chain visibility, BLR Airport is elevating the cargo handling experience for all stakeholders.

Catering to Specialized Cargo Needs
BLR Airport has established itself as a leading hub for perishables, notably by exporting the largest quantities of mangoes and coriander. The new DCT will further enhance its capacity to handle perishable goods. This further secures its position as a key player in this sector.
Additionally, the terminal features dedicated storage areas for specialized cargo. This includes valuables, vulnerable items, live animals, dangerous goods, and radioactive materials. This comprehensive approach handles all cargo types with the utmost care and precision.
The terminal’s scalable design ensures it can support future growth while reducing its environmental impact. By enhancing supply chain resilience, creating employment opportunities, and driving new avenues for trade and commerce, BLR Airport is contributing to sustainable economic growth.

A Vision for the Future
Satyaki Raghunath, COO of Bangalore International Airport Limited, emphasized the terminal’s commitment to sustainable growth. “This new domestic cargo terminal reflects our unwavering commitment to sustainable growth.”
“We’re integrating eco-friendly practices with cutting-edge technology. This creates a facility that addresses the growing demand for domestic cargo but also sets benchmarks for operational efficiency and environmental responsibility.”
Charles Wyley, EVP Middle East, Africa & Asia, Menzies Aviation, highlighted the terminal’s role in meeting future demands. “Our new greenfield domestic cargo terminal at Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru (BLR) is a major step forward. It furthers our commitment to delivering efficient, reliable and future-ready logistics solutions.”

“The rapid growth in air cargo in India is set to reach 5.8 million tonnes by 2029. This facility is designed to not only meet today’s demand but to scale for future needs as the industry continues to evolve.”
With the launch of this dedicated domestic cargo terminal, BLR Airport reinforces its national position. It now leads the way in innovation, efficiency, and sustainability within India’s air cargo landscape.
As air cargo demand continues to rise, the Bengaluru terminal will actively meet the challenges and seize the opportunities ahead. It will drive economic growth and setting new standards for the industry.
