The North of England is poised for a significant economic upswing, thanks to the announcement of a groundbreaking direct air route between Manchester Airport and India.

IndiGo, India’s leading airline, has chosen Manchester as one of its inaugural European long-haul destinations. It marks a pivotal moment in the northern region’s connectivity.

This unprecedented service, commencing in July, will be the sole direct link between the North and India, the world’s fastest-growing major economy.

Business and Political Support

The announcement has been met with resounding acclaim from business and political leaders, who anticipate a substantial contribution to the government’s economic growth agenda.

Jonathan Reynolds, Business and Trade Secretary and MP for Stalybridge and Hyde, emphasized the significance of this development.

“As a Manchester MP and UK Trade Secretary who recently returned from New Delhi, I know this news will be hugely welcomed,” he stated. “Easier, direct flights between India and the North will benefit businesses and visitors alike.”

Reynolds highlighted the strong bilateral relationship between the UK and India, underpinned by robust personal connections and a £41 billion trading relationship. “These new flight routes are a further sign of growth and confidence in the UK economy,” he added.

A Growing Economic Relationship

Greater Manchester’s service exports to India have more than doubled between 2019 and 2022, now reaching a value of £337 million. This burgeoning economic partnership underscores the importance of enhanced connectivity.

The Manchester India Partnership (MIP) drives efforts to strengthen ties between the two regions. It has played a crucial role in advocating for this direct route.

Simon Arora, Chair of the MIP, expressed his delight, stating, “Securing a direct route between Manchester and India has been one of the MIP’s top priorities for many years.”

“We understand the vital role connectivity plays in unlocking economic, cultural, and educational opportunities.” He further emphasized that IndiGo’s choice of Manchester for its first UK service reflects the strong existing connections and synergies between the two economies.

Opening of New Indian Consulate

The timing of this announcement, preceding the opening of Manchester’s new Indian Consulate, adds to the significance. The consulate will provide vital services, such as passport assistance, eliminating the need for travel to Birmingham.

Navendu Mishra, Stockport MP and officer in the All Party Parliamentary Group for British Hindus, echoed the enthusiasm. “I am thrilled by today’s announcement,” he said.

“This new connectivity will greatly benefit Greater Manchester and the wider North of England, strengthening business, diaspora, and educational links between Britain and India.”

Mishra also highlighted the vital role of Manchester Airport in the local and national economy. He noted its status as a major employer and the third-largest airport in Britain.

Chris Woodroofe, Managing Director of Manchester Airport, emphasized the airport’s mission to connect the North with the world. “IndiGo has chosen Manchester as one of its first European destinations. It cements our position as one of Europe’s fastest-growing airports,” he said.

“This new service will be the only direct route to India from the North of the UK. It will be popular with the more than half a million people with Indian heritage who live within our catchment area.”

Woodroofe also underscored the route’s potential to boost trade and productivity, aligning with the government’s economic growth mission.

“It’s an exciting time for relations between the North of England and India,” he added. He cited the new consulate and various cultural and economic partnerships.

IndiGo Celebrates a Milestone

Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo, highlighted the significance of this milestone. “Today, we unlock a new and very exciting chapter in IndiGo’s growth journey. We will connect India to the heart of Europe,” he said.

“These new flights will benefit both our existing and potential customers who fly on these routes.”

Elbers emphasized the strong ties between India and the UK, driven by business, tourism, and a large Indian diaspora.

“These new IndiGo long-haul routes are steps towards realizing our shared vision to build India into a global aviation hub,” he concluded.

The new direct route connects cultures, economies, and people. As Manchester prepares to welcome IndiGo and its passengers, the North of England anticipates enhanced opportunities and strengthened global connections.
