Canada Warns of New US Border Powers to Search Electronic Devices

Canada has updated its travel advisory for the United States, alerting citizens to stricter border policies and new registration rules.

This change reflects growing tensions between the two nations and adds to a wave of global travel advisories for the U.S.

Here’s what Canadians, and other travelers to the United States, should understand about this development.

New Requirement in Force 11 April

The Canadian government now warns that travelers staying in the U.S. for more than 30 days must register with U.S. authorities, effective April 11, 2025.

This rule, stemming from a Trump administration executive order, requires foreign nationals, including Canadians, to comply or face penalties like fines or misdemeanor prosecution.

Search of Electronic Devices

The advisory also highlights that U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents may search electronic devices without a warrant. Refusal to cooperate could lead to detention or deportation, and Canada stresses it cannot intervene if entry is denied.

This isn’t just about registration. The advisory notes that border agents have “significant discretion” in deciding who enters.

Travelers are urged to carry proof of legal status, such as a valid passport or ties to Canada, and to expect heightened scrutiny.

For stays over 30 days, registration involves submitting Form G-325R via a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) online account. Failure to comply could disrupt travel plans, especially for snowbirds or long-term visitors.

Other Nations Updating Travel Warnings

Other countries have also updated their U.S. travel warnings recently. In March 2025, Germany, the UK, Denmark, and Finland adjusted US travel advisories due to stricter immigration enforcement and detentions at the border.

Ireland warned transgender travelers about visa issues tied to gender markers, reflecting U.S. policy shifts under the Trump administration. These changes signal a broader trend of nations cautioning citizens about U.S. entry rules.

For Canadians, this advisory doesn’t raise the risk level beyond “normal security precautions.” However, it’s a clear shift from the historically relaxed border norms with the U.S.

Experts have suggested using burner phones to protect privacy and checking the USCIS website for registration details. With trade disputes and tariff threats straining U.S.-Canada relations, this could further impact tourism and cross-border travel.

Travelers should stay informed. Check Canada’s website page for updates, and monitor U.S. policies as they evolve. As always, preparation is key for air travelers. Know the rules, comply fully, and travel smart to avoid surprises at the border.
