Airports Council International (ACI) World has released its 2024 rankings of the world’s busiest airports.

Overall, the report highlights the ability of major airports to thrive despite global uncertainties.

These key hubs have maintained their top positions, showcasing strength and adaptability while preparing for future growth.

Passenger Traffic Soars

Global passenger numbers in 2024 reached nearly 9.5 billion, a 9% increase from 2023 and 3.8% above 2019’s pre-pandemic levels.

The top 10 busiest airports handled 855 million passengers, about 9% of global traffic. This marks an 8.8% rise from 2023 and an 8.4% increase compared to 2019’s 789 million passengers.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport retained its number-one spot, with Dubai International Airport and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport following closely.

A standout performer was Shanghai Pudong International Airport, which leaped from 21st in 2023 to 10th in 2024. T

his surge was driven by relaxed visa policies, expanded international flights, operational improvements, and the Asia-Pacific region’s recovery, particularly in China.

Istanbul Airport and New Delhi International Airport also held strong rankings, showing significant gains since 2019. Their success stems from airline growth, better infrastructure, and improved global connections.

ACI World Director General Justin Erbacci noted the dynamic. “The world’s busiest airports demonstrate remarkable resilience despite global challenges. These hubs are critical for trade, commerce, and connectivity.”

“As air travel grows, ACI World is committed to supporting its members to ensure the smooth movement of people and goods, fueling economic, social, and cultural progress.”

Overcoming Global Uncertainty

The aviation industry faced hurdles in 2024, including economic shifts and geopolitical tensions. Supply chain issues and aircraft production delays disrupted operations.

Meanwhile, geopolitical conflicts altered flight paths, raised costs, and affected traveler confidence. Potential tariffs also threatened global trade, impacting international travel and infrastructure projects.

Looking ahead to 2025, global passenger traffic is projected to hit 9.9 billion, with a 4.8% growth rate. While demand remains robust, growth is expected to slow as markets transition from recovery-driven spikes to steady, long-term expansion.

Advanced markets may face challenges like stabilizing demand, aircraft shortages, and limited airport capacity.

Meanwhile, emerging markets are likely to see continued growth due to infrastructure investments and a growing middle class.

To stay competitive, airports must prioritize financial stability, infrastructure upgrades, operational efficiency, and sustainability.

These efforts will help the industry navigate economic uncertainty, geopolitical risks, and capacity constraints in the coming years.

Cargo Traffic on the Rise

Air cargo volumes grew by 8.4% in 2024 compared to 2023, reaching over 124 million metric tonnes—a 3.9% increase from 2019.

The top 10 cargo airports handled 32.3 million metric tonnes, about 26% of global volumes. This represents a 9.3% rise from 2023 and a 9.5% increase from 2019’s 29.5 million tonnes.

Hong Kong International Airport led the cargo rankings, followed by Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Memphis International Airport.

The growth was fueled by booming e-commerce, disruptions in maritime shipping, and lower jet fuel prices.

Aircraft Movements Rebound

Global aircraft movements in 2024 reached approximately 100 million, up 4.3% from 2023. However, they are still 2.6% below 2019 levels, reflecting a 97.4% recovery.

The top 10 airports accounted for 6.4 million movements, or over 6% of global traffic. This was a 6.5% increase from 2023 and a 0.4% rise compared to 2019’s 6.3 million movements.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport topped the list for movements. It was followed by Chicago O’Hare International Airport and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.

Looking Ahead

The 2024 rankings underscore the aviation industry’s ability to adapt and grow amid challenges. As global connectivity expands, airports must invest in infrastructure, embrace sustainability, and enhance efficiency to meet rising demand.

With passenger and cargo traffic on the rise, these hubs will continue to drive economic and social progress worldwide.
